KNTU is two stations -- HD1 & HD2
KNTU strives to serve the public interest with news, public affairs, and entertainment programming for the McKinney, Denton, Dallas-Fort Worth area; to provide news and information of community interest about the University of North Texas; and to provide an industry-standards environment in which students learn about radio broadcasting.
KNTU's staff includes volunteers, students who sign up to earn practicum credit toward their degrees, and students who work part time paid jobs in eight middle management positions. All UNT students are eligible to work at KNTU where they will find an excellent opportunity to gain valuable broadcast experience in a variety of areas, including programming and production, news and sports announcing, sales and development, and station administration.
88.1 indie
Licensed to the University of North Texas, both stations are on the air 24 hours, every day of the year, broadcasting with the most power authorized by the FCC at FM 88.1 HD1 and FM 88.1 HD2. If you are interested in volunteering at the stations, follow this link for more information.
The HD1 format of alternative rock went on the air in July 2022 as 88.1 indie. The station streams at 881indie.com and on our app (just search 881 indie in the Apple App-Store or Google Play).
KNTU Jazz 88.1 FM HD2
The HD2 format of jazz went on the air in the mid-1980s; during the 2000s, the station was branded as "88.1, The One" -- it has continued, uninterrupted after the addition of our extra station. When 88.1 indie started, KNTU Jazz moved to streaming only until HD broadcast equipment was installed. The streaming continues at KNTU.com and on TuneIn -- if you don't have an HD radio in your car, but you have a Bluetooth connection with your smartphone you can stream KNTU Jazz in your car. KNTU Jazz also offers hourly newscasts Monday through Friday from NBC Radio (newscasts air on weekends from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and a popular, unique syndicated program called Musical Starstreams that the host identifies as "exotic electronica."
The studios are in the Radio/TV/Film & Performing Arts (RTFP) Building on the Denton campus of the University of North Texas. There are five Media Arts staff members providing guidance to the students: General Manager Dan Balla, Sports & Special Events Manager Zac Babb, Account Executive Rich Edmond, and Chief Engineer Randy Smith.
To sing about the successes of the students above -- Peart is the production manager of The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show (after working as an intern, he joined the show full time after graduating), Bishop is the midday on-air host and marketing manager for WRR 101.1 FM, Hancock (now Allison) is an account executive with Lightbox OOH Video Network.
