Grad student to present paper in Hong Kong

Graduate student Tony Tran will present his paper -- "Informal Globalized Media: Pirate Cultures in Cinema in Contemporary Hanoi, Vietnam" -- at the Asian Cinema Studies Society in Hong Kong over spring break in March.

Tran worked in a pirate DVD shop in Vietnam and wrote his paper on how piracy affects Vietnamese people's consumption of films. Tran said his review of DVD piracy is less from a legal or moral view, but more about how the society incorporates piracy into their everyday lives.

Tran, who's from Arlington, is a second year RTVF Master of Arts student who expects to graduate this May. He got a Bachelor of Arts from Texas A&M.

In an effort to pursue an academic career in teaching and research, Tran plans to begin working on a doctoral degree next.
