Dr. Alan Albarran joined UNT in August 2000 as Professor and Chair of the Department and served in that role until August 2007 when he served as founding Director of the Center for Spanish Language Media from 2006-2011. He resumed duties as the Chair of the Department in 2011, returning to teaching in the fall of 2015.
A former industry practitioner, Dr. Albarran's research interests are in the management and economics of the communication industries. He has served as Editor of two scholarly journals: The International Journal on Media Management (2006-2008) and the Journal of Media Economics (1997-2005). He is the author/editor of 14 books including The Social Media Industries, Media Management and Economics Research in a Transmedia Environment; The Transformation of the Media and Communication Industries; The Media Economy; Handbook of Spanish Language Media; Media as a Driver of the Information Society; Handbook of Media Management and Economics; Management of Electronic Media; Media Economics: Understanding Markets, Industries and Concepts; Global Media Economics; Understanding the Web: Social, Political and Economic Dimensions of the Internet; The Radio Broadcasting Industry; and Time and Media Markets.
Dr. Albarran has given workshops and lectures in several countries including Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Finland, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Mexico, Portugal, China, Taiwan, Russia, Columbia, Chile, and Ecuador. Dr. Albarran's awards include the Broadcast Education Association's Distinguished Scholar Award (2009); the Journal of Media Economics Award of Honor (2008), recognizing lifetime contributions to the field; the 2011 UNT Distinguished Citation for International Education; and the 2006 UNT Toulouse Scholar Award.
His professional experience includes work at six radio and two television stations, as well as industry consulting. He previously served as a professor at Sam Houston State University and Southern Methodist University.
Dr. Albarran teaches courses in the area of industry studies, including media economics, management, entrepreneurship and Spanish Language Media. Dr. Albarran holds the B. A. and M. A. in Communications/Broadcasting from Marshall University and the Ph. D. in Telecommunications from The Ohio State University.
